Customers Affected by Recent Floods Can Count on Commercial Banks for Support

Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday, 24 December 2014:- 13 member banks of The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) with operations in the East Coast states of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu as well as the states of Perak, Perlis and Sabah will be pro-actively assisting customers, be they individuals or businesses, affected by the recent floods.

“Banks understand that this is a difficult and stressful time for those households and businesses affected by the floods. As in all previous occasions, our member banks will be extending a helping hand during this challenging period by providing solutions and assistance to customers based on their individual financial circumstances,” said Chuah Mei Lin, ABM’s Executive Director.

The assistance provided by banks may include, but are not limited to deferring home loan repayments; restructuring business loans without incurring fees; or granting a temporary suspension of repayment instalments, waiver of charges for affected customers seeking replacements of ATM cards, cheque books and passbooks which have been destroyed in the floods.

“Our 13 member banks are making efforts to reach out to customers to help them get back on their feet. Customers facing financial hardship as a result of the floods are also urged to contact their banks as soon as possible so that their situation can be assessed and proper advice can be given,” added Chuah.

In addition, the member banks have begun releasing their individual communique to advise their customers of any temporary disruption of services at their branches due to the floods. Customers of the affected branches are being informed to undertake their banking transactions at alternative branches located close to the affected branches.
